How would you describe your current experienDescribe a time when you felt uncertain about something important to you. What was the reason you were unsure and, if you eventually became assured, how did you become assured?

Summary: There are three means for those who have faith in Jesus Christ to be confident and assured that they are saved and have eternal life.

Read  1 John 5:9-13 and ask the following questions:

          • What do you like about these verses?
          • What appears to be the main idea emphasized in these verses?
          • What is true of the person who has the Son? What is true of the person who does not have the Son of God?
          • On a scale of 0-100%, how sure are you that you have eternal life?

First John 5:13 tells us that we may know  that we have eternal life.  The Bible shows us that there are three means for us to know assuredly that we are saved.

A. God Says So

Read Romans 10:9-13 and ask the following questions:

          • What does God say in this passage?
          • Have you believed in Christ and confessed openly that He is your Lord?
          • Have you called on His name?

B.  The Holy Spirit Bears Witness

Read Romans 8:16 and ask the following questions:

          • What does God say in this passage?
          • What does it mean that the Spirit witnesses with our spirit that we are children of God?

C. Our Love for the Brothers Is Proof

Read 1 John 3:14 and ask the following questions:

          • Have you ever thought of love for other believers as a proof that you are saved?
          • What is the source of a Christian’s love?
          • How is this love different from a cheap, selfish “love” of today’s age?
Consider one person who God has placed on your heart or someone in your life who needs Jesus. How can we bring Christ to them this week?
      • Pray that their hearts would be soft and opened.
      • Show them they matter to you by spending quality time with them. Spend some quality time with them (e.g. phone call, video call, workout, get lunch, study together, etc.)
      • Send them a text message of encouragement and include a verse you appreciated this week.
      • Ask for their perspective about things going on around them in the world.
      • If the opportunity presents itself, tell them what you learned this week about what the Bible says about the assurance of salvation.
